About Suffolk County in Massachusetts

The history of Cambridge, MA extends far back into the history of America. It is a very old city with a lot to offer its residents and the tourists who visit.

The earliest history of Cambridge was that it was founded in 1630 but wasn't regarded as an official town until 6 years later. It was originally called New Towne by Puritan settlers from England, who were seeking religious freedom in America. These early residents soon built a village along the banks of the Charles River with sturdy oak trees providing building materials for homes and churches

The first official document regarding Cambridge was recorded on October 27, 1631 when John Harvard donated his library (consisting mostly of theological works) and half his estate towards what would become known as Harvard College. The deal stipulated that any money made over 50 pounds should be used to buy land or books.

After his death, the John Harvard library became a fully functioning college and later renamed after him. He was buried just behind Holy Trinity Church in West Cambridge. From this location you can see Old North Church in Boston across the Charles River. The tower of the Old North Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts has an important history. During British occupation of Boston when church bells were silenced then released by patriots on Evacuation Day December 17, 1776 so that people living nearby might know they had been freed.

Today Cambridge is located in what is now recognized as eastern Massachusetts and resides in Middlesex county.
